What are Scones?

Scones are delightful baked treats that originated in Scotland and gained popularity in England and worldwide for their crumbly texture and rich flavor. They are typically round or triangular and are often enjoyed as a breakfast or afternoon tea treat, accompanied by butter, jam, or other spreads.

What You Will Need

  • Whole-wheat flour – the key ingredient in the recipe
  • Baking Powder – for a beautiful rise and a gorgeous texture
  • Salt – balances the sweetness and other flavors
  • Butter – should be fridge-cold
  • Yogurt – provides a subtle tanginess and helps to keep the scones moist and tender, resulting in a softer texture
  • Vanilla Extract – gives a pleasant and aromatic flavor
  • Milk – brush on top of scones before baking
  • Lemon – scones taste wonderful when juice from fresh lemon is used
  • Sugar – can adjust the quantity as per your taste

Helpful Tips

Making scones is a fun and creative process. Here are a few tips to ensure they turn out perfect every time you make them:

  • Use cold butter – Cold butter is essential for achieving a flaky texture in your scones. Cube the butter and keep it chilled until you incorporate it into the dough.
  • Measure the flour correctly – Spoon and level your flour. Spoon the flour into your measuring cup and level off the top with the back of a knife.
  • Don’t overwork the dough – Overmixing or overhandling the dough can lead to dense scones. Mix the ingredients until just combined, and handle the dough as little as possible.
  • Don’t skip the resting time – Allow the scones to rest in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before baking. This helps relax the gluten and results in a lighter texture.
  • Brush with milk – To achieve a beautiful golden color on your scones, brush the top of the scones with milk before baking.
  • Experiment with different flavors – Feel free to add your favorite flavors such as chocolate chips, berries, dried fruits, nuts, or spices to the dough to create your unique variations.
  • Storing – Freshly baked scones are best enjoyed warm, straight from the oven. If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Just before eating, warm them in the microwave for 15-30 seconds or the oven at 180°C (356°F) for 10 minutes or until warmed through.

Equipment Needed

  • Oven – A good quality oven with sleek design and ample capacity for baking, grilling, and toasting.
  • Baking Tray – A good quality baking tray or sheet is essential for baking scones in the oven. The flat surface of the tray ensures even baking and prevents the scones from spreading too much.

Commonly Asked Questions

Can I use all-purpose flour instead of whole-wheat flour?

You can substitute all-purpose flour for whole-wheat flour if you prefer a lighter texture. However, whole-wheat flour is healthier than refined flour.

Can I make these scones gluten-free?

I have not tested these scones for gluten-free but you can use alternative flours like almond or oat flour.

Can I replace the sugar with a sugar substitute?

You can use a sugar substitute like Stevia in this recipe, but the texture and taste of the scones may vary slightly.

Why did my scones turn out dry after baking?

Dry scones can result from overbaking or using too much flour. Make sure to follow the baking time mentioned in the recipe and measure the flour accurately. If the dough feels too dry, you can add a splash of milk to achieve the desired consistency.
